IVF is not as easy or successful as many think it is
When I spoke to award-winning filmmaker and art designer Irina Vodar a week ahead of the North American premier of her documentary at the Awareness Film Festival, I joked with her that the easiest way to empty a room is to simply say the word ‘infertility’ aloud.
She laughed knowingly and agreed that few topics make people more uncomfortable. That’s why the premier of her film, Anything You Lose, in Los Angeles, the heart of the entertainment industry is all the more remarkable.
Vodar describes her film as “a story of hope and resilience that chronicles the impact of reproductive treatments.” It also brings into focus IVF addiction, shame, isolation, and silence.
If reactions from viewers in London — who saw an earlier cut of the documentary are any indication — viewers stateside are in for a much-needed exploration of issues often hidden from view.
